The first problem was that the firmware I had was to old to update to Nougat. I had to install L29C636B202 using HiSuite. This updates the firmware to B202. Updating to B202 makes it capable of upgrading to Nougat. So, I then install L29C636B370 to my phone using HiSuite and Huawei Updater.
To get into fastboot mode you keep the phone plugged into computer and hold power and volume down until you get to the white fastboot screen. There is no need to wait for the battery to drain as you can just force shut down a phone using power + volume down holding.
Rebooting the phone then shows an "update failed" notification, and allows me to keep using my phone as usual. Opening Huawei eRecovery, instead, allows me to select "Download latest version and recovery". This option gets me a "Getting package info from server", but quickly turns into a "Getting package info failed".
